Where have all the custom themes gone?

Who out there still fully customizes (or even totally writes from scratch) their own theme for their CMS or otherwise themable software? More and more this seems to be a dying art, especially on personal blogs, and it’s kind of a shame. I find a lot of joy in rolling my own code. Are theme frameworks just that good now that writing from scratch is foolhardy? Genuinely curious.

I would suspect most personal blog users don’t have the skill to write their own theme. I know enough to get a self hosted blog going, but wouldn’t want to invest the time in writing a theme when I can find one that suits my needs in a fraction of the time.

I really hope that it isn’t turning into a “cookie-cutter” theme/template-only web. Without people that actually feel the need for a custom and unique design, the web will become a very boring place.
